“Mértola, the last port of the Mediterranean” at Tavira – 13th November to 27th April 2013

“The exhibition ‘Mértola, the last port of the Mediterranean’ by Santiago Macias will be unveiled on 13th November, 11:00 AM, at the Municipal Museum of Tavira - Islamic Centre, and will be open until 27th April 2013.

This exhibition reflects the work of all whom have passed by Mértola and cooperated with its Archaeological Field in order to help build its history.

People arrived at Mértola by boat. To achieve this, they had to overcome a few dozen kilometres from the mouth of the Guadiana river and the town, often navigating treacherous passages. A little over Mértola the river is no longer navigable, and the town was the end of a line where all sorts of people arrived to over thousands of years.

For centuries, the wealth of the town was based in its deposits of copper, silver and gold, which were located to the east and west of Mértola. Its port was a point of passage of an immense wealth that enabled the growth of the town.”
